CEA CAPA Excursions
Enjoy a half-day coach tour of London, a full-day excursion to Stonehenge and Bath, plus choose one from: full-day excursion to Oxford, Brighton, Stratford-upon-Avon and Kenilworth Castle, or Salisbury and Glastonbury.
Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. You’ll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we’ve offered in the past.
Windsor
The official home of England’s royal family for 900 years, Windsor claims to be the largest and oldest occupied castle in the world. Tour the immense grounds, lavish staterooms, crowd-pleasing dollhouse, art gallery, and chapel. You’ll also visit the state apartments, from the intimate chambers of Charles II to the enormous Waterloo Chamber, built to commemorate the victory over Napoleon in 1815. All are exquisitely furnished with important works of art from the Royal Collection. After lunch, head across the bridge from the castle toward the college of Eton, the exclusive school that’s educated eighteen former British prime ministers and members of the royal family.
Cambridge
The beautiful city of Cambridge is known for its academia, architecture, and majestic buildings, like Kings College and Great St Mary’s Church. Enjoy a guided tour of the colleges and learn about the history of the University, as well some of the pranks Cambridge students get up to. Take a punt down the River Cam, or jump on a bicycle and see the city like a local.
Oxford
Oxford is famous for its University which, with its thirty-eight colleges, is the home of British academia. Oxford was established in the 9th century and residence of both royalty and scholars for over 800 years; today, the city is a bustling cosmopolitan town. The excursion to Oxford begins with a walking tour of the delights of Carfax Tower, Bodelian Library, Ashmolean Museum, and Christ Church, founded by Cardinal Wolsey in 1524 and one of Oxford's largest colleges. More recently, Christ Church gained fame as a setting in several Harry Potter films. After the tour, you’ll have free time to explore other colleges, shop in the covered market, or try your hand at a traditional Oxford past-time: punting on the river which, similar to a Venetian gondolier, tests your strength and navigation skills.
Stonehenge and Bath
Travel by coach from London to Salisbury Plain, site of mysterious Stonehenge. The first stones are believed to have been placed as many as 5000 years ago, with the final phase completed around 1,500 BC. Wonder at how prehistoric man managed to transport these stones, weighing up to 5 tons each, across many miles before the invention of the wheel. Continue on to Bath, famous for its hot springs and 2000-year-old Roman Baths. The tour includes a visit to the Baths, where you can walk in the footsteps of the Romans and even taste the spring waters. Later, join a guided walking tour of this World Heritage city to admire its Regency architecture, including the Royal Crescent.
Brighton
Known as "London by the Sea," Brighton is as cosmopolitan as its larger counterpart, but boasts an idyllic setting on the English Channel at the edge of the South Downs. A typical English seaside resort with an historic waterfront, Brighton is also home to a diverse array of quirky shops, pubs, and bars as well as excellent high street shopping. The excursion begins with a walking tour of the historic town center to take in “The Lanes,” a series of cobbled streets lined with shops. Take a walk along the seafront Palace Pier, one of the last seaside piers to be constructed in England and now a monument to the contemporary pleasures of roller coasters, arcades, and souvenir shops. After lunch, you’ll visit the Royal Pavilion, formerly a farmhouse rented by the then Prince of Wales (the future George IV), and take advantage of the benefits of Brighton’s therapeutic seaside location.
A Weekend in Wales
We’ll visit the ruins of a Roman amphitheater and soldiers’ barracks, a centuries-old castle, travel 300 feet underground to a coal mine, visit a historic Welsh town, and (finally) see a majestic abbey dating from the 12th century. You’ll have free time to spend an evening in the capital city of Cardiff or Wales’ second city, Swansea.
A Weekend in York
York is known for its Roman, Viking, and medieval heritage, as well as its famous residents, the Bronte sisters. On this weekend trip, you’ll visit York Minster (the largest gothic cathedral in Northern Europe), Fountains Abbey, Bronte Parsonage Museum, and Haworth village.
Scotland: Edinburgh and the Highlands (Spring Semester Only - Optional Additional Fee)
Depart from London’s bustling city streets and travel by high-speed train to Edinburgh, historic capital city and the first stop in your three-day excursion to scenic Scotland.
A major player during the time of the Enlightenment, Edinburgh is as an UNESCO World Heritage Site due in part to its distinctive Medieval Old Town, which preserves 16th century city plans and buildings. Weave through Edinburgh streets, visiting iconic sites including the Royal Mile, the Scotch Whisky Heritage Center, Edinburgh Castle, and the Palace of Holyrood House.
Next, we’ll transport you from the familiarity of city surroundings into lush, emerald-colored hills. The Scottish Highlands house a significantly lower population than the country’s urban centers. Experience a blend of geographical and historical sightseeing euphoria as you trek from monument to monument, dispersed throughout the stunning landscape’s rocky mountain ranges and plains. Discover the enchantment of the Wallace Monument, commemorating Braveheart’s stand against Edward I; brave the shores of Loch Ness, home of Nessie, the infamous lake monster; the Hermitage, a.k.a. Birnam Wood in Shakespeare’s Macbeth; and more.
Paris (Fall Semester Only – Optional Additional Fee)
Flourish in the city of food, fashion, and culture on this excursion to Europe’s most populated metropolis: Paris. Start your Parisian adventure on a tour of the city’s iconic sites including the Arc de Triomphe, the Louvre, the Eiffel Tower, and the Champs Elysées.
Use your free evening to discover Paris at your own pace, whether you prefer sipping café in a quaint restaurant or indulging in the city’s finest delicacies.
The next day, you’ll visit the elaborate Notre Dame Cathedral, charismatic Latin Quarter, Montmartre (the artists’ quarter), and Sacré Coeur Basilica, where you’ll will climb up to enjoy a view of the sparkling city from its highest point. Don’t worry; you’ll have plenty of free time to get lost in French culture and experience life through Parisian eyes. Whether you choose to stroll along the River Seine nibbling on a freshly-baked baguette as you watch the locals meander by, or experience culinary rapture as you sink your teeth into a ham and cheese crepe, you’ll encounter the magic of Paris during this excursion.
