Girona & Besalú

Madrid

Penedès Wine Country

Pyrenees and Romanesque Art

Get out and explore! Excursions are offered for most semester, year, and summer programs. Semester students are typically offered between two to three excursions and summer study students are typically offered between one to two excursions. When you study abroad in Barcelona, you’ll receive a calendar of excursions during orientation; here are a few day and overnight excursions we’ve offered in the past.

Girona & Besalú

The charming walled town of Girona is one of Spain's most prosperous and enticing cities. Explore historical remnants of the diverse cultures that have influenced the city through the ages, walk along the steep alleyways of the Jewish quarter, visit one of many art museums, and enjoy beautiful views of the Onyar River. Nearby Besalú is a stunning medieval town designated as a historical national property. You’ll travel in time just by wandering its streets.

Madrid

As Spain’s capital and largest cosmopolitan city, lively Madrid is known for its friendly locals and innovative art and culture. Visit the Prado Museum, which houses Spanish and European paintings from the 12th to 18th century, and view modern art at the acclaimed Reina Sofia National Art Centre. Stroll around Madrid’s most famous arcaded square, the Plaza Mayor. Visit the Royal Palace and beautiful Park El Retiro. Madrid’s cultural diversity and world-famous art museums are guaranteed to offer something for everyone’s taste.

Penedès Wine Country

Explore the birthplace of the famous Cava (Catalan champagne) while exploring the vineyards and underground cellars of the Penedès wineries, learning about the wine-making process, and enjoying a wine tasting. Finish the day with a typical Catalan lunch, where you can try favorites like pa amb tomàquet.

Pyrenees and Romanesque Art

At the northeastern edge of the Pyrenees, Vall de Boí is known for its scenic landscape and for its nine tiny Romanesque churches, designated as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Enjoy the amazing architecture and paintings before completing your excursion with a hike in the stunning Aigüestortes National Park.

Take advantage of your time studying abroad in Barcelona! CEA CAPA offers cultural activities to match your interests. Whether you enjoy concerts, clubs, sports, cooking, language exchanges, or something entirely different, our onsite staff helps you engage with local culture. Many activities are offered through our Experiential Learnings, which help you connect lessons learned in the classroom to hands-on experiences outside of class. Examples include:

Barça Soccer Match
Watch a soccer match at impressive Camp Nou, Europe’s largest stadium, home to top European soccer club FC Barcelona, and a state-of-the-art city landmark. Experience the thrill of 100,000 fans screaming, applauding, and waving red and blue flags in unison while the players emerge from the tunnels to start the match.

Tapas Cooking Workshop
Learn to make the Spanish culinary treat known as tapas. These appetizers are typically eaten between main meals, allowing you to make it until lunch or dinner. The most important feature of tapeo (eating tapas) is its collective character; people usually eat tapas while standing up and talking, making tapeo a social event. In this workshop, you’ll chop and combine ingredients as you learn to make some of the best cold and warm tapas, while expanding your Spanish vocabulary to include culinary terms.

Castellers
Castells are human towers built in town squares by Castellers. People of all ages and sizes take part in a castell, forming colles, or associations, that train and prepare castells together. The building of castells is particularly popular in central and southern Catalunya.

Bomb Shelter
As a way to protect the population from bombing during the Spanish Civil War, the local community built more than 400 underground bomb shelters. Travel back in time and visit rehabilitated bomb shelter “Number 307;” here, you’ll get a taste of what Barcelona residents experienced during the war.

Intercultural Learning Workshop
This workshop is offered at the beginning of each semester. It’s designed to help you understand your new cultural context and provide strategies that help you adjust to cultural differences in order to enrich your experience.

Language Exchange Program
Meet with local university students to improve your communication skills and gain first-hand knowledge of each other’s culture. CEA CAPA Barcelona collaborates with local academic institutions to organize language exchanges between students, including:

  1. Mandatory activity for students enrolled in Spanish language classes
  2. Speak Local, Be Global activity (group gatherings at CEA CAPA or at local schools)
  3. One-to-One language exchanges

Students participating in exchanges are encouraged to share contact information so they can continue practicing.

Volunteer Opportunities
Participate in a volunteer experience with local organizations such as:

  • Pediatric Hospital Sant Joan De Déu: The Volunteering Association of the Pediatric Hospital Sant Joan de Déu supports families while their children are in the hospital and promotes recreational activities for sick children. As a volunteer, you’ll help kids to express their feelings, communicate, get distracted from their illnesses, and experience some joy during their stay at the hospital. The activities may include reading books, helping with homework, painting, drawing, taking kids to the hospital library or playroom, or simply keeping them company.
  • ITACA Associació Educativa: This non-profit social organization offers an after-school program for at-risk children. ITACA focuses on promoting healthy habits, establishing new routines, working on values, and facilitating social inclusion. CEA CAPA volunteers help children with their homework and participate in the after-school activities.
  • English Teacher Assistant at Spanish Public Schools: The teaching assistant program allows local primary, middle, and high school students to practice and improve their English conversational skills with native English speakers like you. Along with an assigned mentor, CEA CAPA volunteers work together with English teachers, helping with language lessons and preparing and leading classroom activities.

*Please note: If you intend to volunteer, intern, or participate in service learning with children, you must obtain a criminal background check prior to departure for your program. Please contact your Site Specialist for more information.

Career and Re-entry Workshop
Explore the skills and knowledge you’ve gained and learn how to articulate your growth in your future job searches. In this interactive workshop, you’ll reflect and process your study abroad experience, connect study abroad with your career goals, and obtain practical advice to help you transition back to the U.S.

Active Learning
This award-winning program helps you connect your experiences outside the classroom with the content you learn in class, following an experiential learning model. The program includes unique activities chosen for relevance to course offerings in areas like communications, art history, business, political science, and more, all with a recreational component. (In other words, the program allows you to have fun while you learn!) All activities and trips are included in the program fee; you’ll have the opportunity to sign up during the first week of the semester.

Play Sports
Studying abroad in Barcelona is even better when you take care of yourself, stay healthy, and have the energy you need to fully live the experience. CEA CAPA Barcelona’s Muévete project offers discounts in a local gym and organized activities such as sunrise runs, soccer league, yoga, basketball, Zumba classes, and more. CEA CAPA Barcelona Center
CEA CAPA Barcelona Center

The CEA CAPA Barcelona Center provides an interdisciplinary liberal arts education in the heart of Barcelona, Spain. Courses are offered in both Spanish and English and give you the opportunity to both improve your language skills and further your academic pursuits in a variety of subjects with Barcelona as your classroom.

Courses bring the diverse history, politics, culture, economics, and art of Spain to life, incorporating components that expose you to different elements of the city, from monuments and museums to businesses, local food markets, and government agencies. You’ll be encouraged to explore on your own and draw connections between the subjects you study and the observations you make outside of the classroom. Not only will you get to know your host city, you’ll also gain insight into how Spain fits into the larger European context.

CEA CAPA Barcelona Center curriculum provides the tools and direction you need to both learn about Spain, and to reflect on your own country and culture. Expect to actively participate in classes, as faculty will facilitate your intellectual, cultural, and emotional growth through lively discussions.

Accreditation

Courses taught at the CEA CAPA Barcelona Center have been designed in conjunction with, and approved by, the University of New Haven (UNH) or the University of Minnesota (U of MN). After the successful completion of a session at the CEA CAPA Barcelona Center, you will receive a grade report or official transcript of your work from UNH or U of MN, depending on the courses that you choose. The agreements between CEA CAPA with its schools of record follow the highest standards of good practice in education abroad, and satisfy the rigorous requirements of the Universities’ institutional accreditors, making credits earned at the CEA CAPA Barcelona Center easily transferable to US-accredited institutions. Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona
Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona

The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) was founded in 1968. Today, UAB offers undergraduate, master’s, and doctorate programs in the fields of humanities, social sciences, health sciences, experimental sciences and engineering. UAB’s links with local institutions, industry, and businesses provides students with practical experience helping them to be better prepared as they enter the professional world. More than 17% of UAB’s 50,000 students are international.

UAB encompasses several campuses; CEA CAPA students may attend classes at la Casa de Convalescencia in the city center, close to Gaudi's famous Sagrada Familia. The building was completed in 1930 and granted UNESCO World Heritage Site status in 1997. CEA CAPA students may also attend class on the Eixample campus, located on the same metro line (and within walking distance) of the CEA CAPA Barcelona Center.

Accreditation

The Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (UAB) is recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education as a degree-granting institution of higher learning. Additionally, UAB is accredited through the Catalan University Quality Assurance Agency.

Grading

The Spanish grading system is based on a scale of 10, as opposed to 100 in the U.S. system; however, grading varies from subject to subject. For example, in mathematics, a student may receive a 10 for completing all the problems correctly, whereas in the humanities, a 7 on an essay is considered very acceptable. Grading in Spain can be severe, and grades of 9 and 10 are rare. Transcripts from Spanish universities list both numerical and verbal grades.

Per Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, interpretation of the Spanish grading scale is as follows:

University of Barcelona
University of Barcelona

Founded in 1450, the University of Barcelona (UB) is the oldest and largest university in Catalonia with a student population of over 90,000. UB emphasizes international relations and has been a leading host of study abroad students for many years, welcoming 5,000 international students each year. The university awards more than 10,000 bachelor’s degrees and 450 doctorates annually.

UB operates four campuses throughout the city. Classes are instructed by university faculty through Estudios Hispánicos at both the main campus—centrally located in a 16th century building—and a secondary campus located just outside the city center and easily reached by metro or bus.

Accreditation

The University of Barcelona is recognized by the Spanish Ministry of Education as a degree-granting institution of higher learning.

We have found verbal grades to be more universal and reliable when determining U.S. grade equivalents. Therefore, even though a numeric grade is listed, we rely primarily on the verbal grade, since the verbal grading scale is consistent across Spanish universities.
